About The Program

The majority of participation in the SHINE Strong Program will be remote, but the Summer Intensive will begin with a two-week, bootcamp that will take place in-person.

The Program

SHINE Strong is a yearlong training program for undergraduates interested in developing expertise in HIV prevention science and trans and nonbinary population health research.

Scholars commit 40 hours a week during the 10-week Summer Intensive on coursework, training, and mentorship activities. Scholars work with their mentor on the development of a mentored research project that will culminate in a publishable, peer-reviewed, scientific manuscript by the end of the Summer Intensive.

The Summer Intensive will take place June 24 - August 30, 2024. The Program will host an in-person bootcamp at UCI (June 24-July 5, 2024). The remainder of the program will consist of remote learning, on-going collaboration, and mentored research.

The academic year following the Summer Intensive, Scholars will attend Program activities each month, develop and submit graduate school applications, and participate in the peer-review process to publish their mentored research in a scientific journal.

Program Incentives

The goal of SHINE Strong is to support undergraduate scholars in their pursuit of graduate studies and careers in HIV prevention science and trans and nonbinary health research. To that end, the SHINE Strong Program will provide the following to each selected Scholar:

  • One-on-one mentorship by a leading scientist in HIV prevention science and/or trans and nonbinary population health.

  • Training in HIV prevention science, trans and nonbinary population health, research, and data analysis.

  • Experience developing and executing a mentored research project.

  • Publishing original research in a scientific journal.

  • Receive guidance and social support to apply for graduate programs.

During the Summer Intensive, Scholars will be paid $20 per hour at 40 hours per week for 10 weeks. Scholars will receive an additional stipend to assist with offsetting partial housing and food expenses ($500/month and $300/month). Scholars will also have all expenses covered to attend and participate in the Program’s two-week bootcamp at UCI which will include travel, room and board (estimated at about $4,000 per person).

During the academic year following the Summer Intensive, Scholars will be paid $20 per hour at 5 hours per week (or roughly $400/month for 9 months) to continue their participation in the Program.
