Apply to Become a SHINE Strong Scholar

The Application Process

The application process will take place in two phases. To apply, interested participants will need to:

  1. Complete the online application below; and

  2. Email a cover letter and resume (in PDF format) to us at SHINEstrongSF@gmail.com.

  3. NOTE: An effective cover letter will describe your interest in participating in the SHINE Strong Program and potential for a career in HIV prevention science and care and trans and nonbinary population health. Cover letters need to be single spaced, with 1 inch margins, and not exceed 1 page. Your resume can be any length.

Once applications are reviewed, we will contact Semi-Finalists to schedule an interview with SHINE Strong faculty and mentors. We will also request the following Supplemental Materials:

  1. Academic Transcript (unofficial transcripts will be accepted);

  2. Proof of enrollment; and

  3. One (1) Letter of Recommendation from a University Professor, Instructor, Lecturer, Advisor, or Staff person. If you are unable to get a letter of recommendation from someone at your University, you may have a current or former supervisor write a Letter on your behalf. Letter writers must email Letters (in PDF format and on organizational letterhead) directly to us at SHINEstrongSF@gmail.com (with the following in the Subject Line “Letter of Recommendation for [INSERT YOUR NAME HERE]”).

After interviews are completed and Supplemental Materials reviewed, Finalists will be selected and notified. Program requirements and details will be reviewed with Finalists, faculty, and their mentors. Prior to beginning the program, all SHINE Strong Scholars must review and sign Participant Agreements.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at SHINEstrongSF@gmail.com. We’d love to hear from you.
